This is one of the first designs I tried when I was just starting, and I learned it from Sew Yeah on Youtube. I practiced every day to improve my skills and learn more about this craft. Ever since then, I explored other more complex patterns. But this will always be one of my favorites. If you are new to quilting, I suggest you start with this. It’s very easy, and the process is repetitive as it is just made from rectangles. Keep on reading or watch the video below to learn how to sew an easy French braid quilt. Happy sewing!

Instructions:

Step 1:

Cut 1 piece of 2 1/2″ square from 5 jelly roll strips. Next, cut 6 pieces of 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips from each jelly roll. For the sashing, cut 14 pieces of 2 1/2″ x WOF strips.

Step 2:

Stitch a 2 1/2″ square to the side of one rectangle, then continue sewing strips on alternate sides. Match the top edge of one side of the new strip with the narrow end of the strip you just sewed. Keep doing it until you have sewn about 48 strips.

Step 3:

Using a ruler and rotary cutter, trim the corners off by lining your ruler along the exterior point. Each row should have a width of 6 1/2″. Once all rows are trimmed, add the 2 1/2″ sashing strips along the length of the braid. After you have sewn the sashing between each braid row, sew a 2 1/2″ strip along the top, bottom, and sides.
