Believe it or not, making this checkered dresden quilt by Missouri Star is super easy. If you haven’t heard of the dresden pattern before, check this out: Easy Dresden Plate. It is a simpler version of this checkered one.
This block may look complicated, but trust me, it is not. Everyone can do it at home! You don’t have to cut the pieces one by one. It comes together easily and quickly.

Instead of using one fabric for each plate, use a four-unit strip. It is made by sewing four different strips together. After that, use your template to cut the dresden plates. The steps are very easy to follow – I am sure you won’t have a hard time finishing this quilt. You can use the block to make a centerpiece mat, table runner, baby quilt, or pillow cover.
Choose four different strips and sew them together on the side making a four-unit strip. Press it flat, then iron the first two out and the next one as well. Repeat with four different strips.
Place the dresden template on top of your four unit strip with the small end lined at the bottom of your strip set. Cut on both sides. Flip your template with the small end lined up to the top of your strip set and the side is lined to the diagonal of the fabric. Cut on the other side. Repeat the process for the whole unit, and with the other four unit strips.
Get one dresden piece and fold the large end in half, then sew. Repeat with the other pieces. Push the tips back to make the points.
Arrange them just like in the photo below. Sew them in fours, so you will make 5 sets. Once they are sewn in sets, sew them together to make the circle. Press it flat.
Fold the 22″ square in half two times. Place the dresden on top, making sure it is centered. Pin it in place.
Cut a circle from the border fabric and interfacing. Place them right sides together and sew all the way around. Make a cut on the center of the interfacing and turn it right side out. Place on top of the center of your dresden and press flat. Sew with a blanket stitch.
