Look how bright and beautiful this Dresden plate centerpiece is! I’m so in love with the shape and fabrics that the Fat Quarter Shop used for this project. It has all the colors of spring with its oranges, yellows, greens, and blues. Watch the video tutorial for the full instructions.

Instructions:

Step 1:

Get 1 of the rectangles and the starburst ruler. Lay the 1-inch line at the bottom, then cut on all sides. Do the same for the other 11 rectangles. The remaining rectangle is for the center – set it aside.

Step 2:

Lay the starburst cutouts into a ring and sew them together. Start by placing two on top of each other, right sides together, and pin on the sides. Backstitch at the beginning, stitch all the way to the end and backstitch again. Use a 1.2 stitch length. Repeat with the other pairs.

Step 3:

Turn the fabrics open and press them flat. Next, press the seams open.

Step 4:

Lay it out again in a circle. Separate them in two: top and bottom. Sew them separately and press them open. Once done, sew them together. Press them open as well as the seams.

Step 5:

Place the fusible batting on top of the backing fabric and press with an iron.

Step 6:

Place the 20″ backing fabric, batting side down, and dresden circle face down. Pin them down. It should be very flat on the back and front. Draw a quarter-inch line on each of the tips. Stitch a quarter inch away from the edge on all sides.

Step 7:

Remove the pins. Cut right on the edge of the dresden plate, then cut a little top off from the tips. After that, cut a tiny bit out on the V.

Step 8:

Turn it inside out from the center. Press with an iron.

Step 9:

Sew starting from the center, go out around each petal and back.

Step 10:

Draw a 4 1/2″ circle on the sew-in interfacing and pin it on the rectangle you set aside earlier. Sew all around the circle. Cut about eight of an inch around the outside of the circle. Cut a hold on the center of the interfacing and pull it right side out. Fold it in half two times to find the center. Sew it in the center of the plate.
