The cathedral window block is one of my favorite quilt blocks. It’s just simple yet elegant. If it’s your first time seeing one, you’d probably think it’s too difficult to make. But trust me, it’s actually easy! This tutorial from Missouri Star will show you how simple the steps are.

Inspired by the beautiful and colorful stained glass windows in churches and cathedrals, this block became popular in the 1930s. To this day, it remains one of the most loved quilt patterns.
To make this block, all you need is a pack of 5″ printed squares and 5″ background squares also known as charm packs. Watch the video below for the full instructions. Happy quilting!
Take one background square and fold it in half diagonally to make a triangle. Repeat 3 more times to make four.
Take one print square and two folded background squares. Stack the two triangles and place them on top of the print square on the right bottom side, lining the straight edges. Then take another print square and place it on top. Pin everything in place. Sew on the right side with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Open and press it flat.
Make two pieces in different colors.
Arrange the two pieces together so that a diamond forms in the middle. Sew them together.
Take another 5″ print square and place it in the center of the diamond.
Fold over the background fabric over the print square and top stitch, following the curves. Repeat on all four sides.
Do the same process for other print squares and background squares to make more blocks. Sew the blocks together in rows, then sew the rows together to make the quilt top.
