This duplicity quilt pattern from Material Girl Quilts is one example of what you can create with HSTs. Each block is entirely made of HSTs, and you’ll need 16 pieces per block. This quilt is fat quarter-friendly and doesn’t require any background fabric. Watch the video below for the full instructions.

Easy Duplicity Quilt Materials

  • 16 fat quarters in different colors, cut into 16 pieces of 4 1/2″ squares

Note: make sure your fat quarters are at least 18″ in width or more

How to Make a Duplicity Quilt

Step 1:

Take two pieces of 4 1/2″ squares from two different fabrics. Place them right sides together and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, then sew a 1/4″ on either side of the line. Once done, cut directly on the diagonal. Open each one and press towards the dark side. You now have two half-square triangles. Trim if necessary. They should measure 4″ square.

Repeat this process with the same fabric squares to create 32 pieces of half-square triangles.

Step 2:

Take 16 pieces of half-square triangles and lay them out just like in the photo below. Sew four rows with 4 HSTs each, then sew the rows together to complete the duplicity quilt. It should measure 14 1/2″ square.

For each row, press the seams in opposite directions, then between the rows, press the seams open.

Step 3:

Once you are finished with the first block, take the remaining half-square triangles of the same colorway, and arrange them in the opposite color direction as you did with your first block. The block will just be the same, but the colors are swapped.

Step 4:

Create 2 blocks per colorway.

Step 5:

Lay the blocks in 4  rows with 4 blocks each. Make sure to rotate the direction of each block. See the photo below for reference.
