This DIY gardening project by A Little Bit Of Everything Southern Homestead has a built-in water reservoir that lets your plants water themselves. It is very easy to build and only requires a few materials, like buckets, milk jugs, and PVC pipes. This is great for those who are new to gardening or don’t have enough space in their homes as you can easily move it around. Watch the video below for the full instructions and explanation.

Easy Wicking Bucket Containers Materials

  • 5-gallon bucket
  • 1-gallon milk jug
  • 1 1/2 of 1 1/4 PVC pipe
  • razor blade
  • marker
  • drill

How to Make Wicking Bucket Containers

Step 1:

Drill 1/8 inch holes in the milk jug on all sides, four at the top and four at the bottom. You want to get very close to the bottom. These holes will allow the water to come and go freely into the container without letting dirt in.

Cut the pipe into 20 inches then cut one end at a 45-degree angle. Make sure to remove any plastic shavings.

Step 5:

Measure 5″ from the bucket then mark. Drill a 1/2″ hole onto the mark. Make sure any plastic shavings are out.

Step 6:

Place the jug with the pipe inside the bucket. You want it close to the hole as possible.

Step 7:

Fill it with potting mix halfway, add the additives, then fill the rest with potting mix again. Plant your plant and water it through the pipe.
