To make one block, you only need 5″ colored squares and 3″ background squares. This pattern involves a lot of snowballing. It means sewing a small square on the corner of a bigger square from corner to corner. You will do it in three corners of a 5″ colored square. The last thing you have to do is sew four units together, just like a four-patch. Watch the video below for full instructions.
Cut 3-inch strips from your background fabric, then sub-cut into 3-inch squares. For each block, you need 12 pieces of 3″ background squares and 4 pieces of 5″ colored squares.
Take 3 background squares and fold them in half diagonally to make a crease. Place the two background squares on opposite corners on top of a 5″ colored square. Sew directly on the lines, trim the corners, and press them open. Take the last background square, place it on a colored corner, and sew directly on the diagonal line. Trim the corner, cut the corner, and press it open.
Repeat the steps with the other 3 pieces of 5″ colored squares.
Arrange the four units together just like a four-patch forming an X. Sew them in pairs first, making sure the two sides are matching up. Once done, sew the pairs together to make the block. Be sure to match the center seam. Press it open. Trim into a square if needed.
Sew 7 rows with 6 blocks each. You will use a total of 42 blocks for this quilt. Mix and match the light and dark colors to make the pattern more interesting.
For the inner border, sew a 2 1/2″ background strip all the way around. The outer border measures 5 1/2″.
