Make sure to save the peels if you are planning to make apple or orange recipes as you will need them for this stovetop potpourri. You can simply put them in a reusable plastic bag and place them inside the fridge until they are ready to use. It’s a great way to reuse them instead of throwing them into the trash.

Simmering Pot Ingredients

  • orange peels
  • apple peels
  • 1 teaspoon of cloves
  • 2 to 3 sticks of cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tablespoon of artificial vanilla extract
  • water
  • nutmeg (optional)
  • allspice (optional)
  • star anise (optional)

Note: You can use a saucepan, instant pot, slow cooker, crockpot, or big soup pot. The smaller the pot is the more you’re going to have to refill and replenish the water.

Step 1:

Add the orange peels, apple peels, 1 teaspoon of cloves, 2 to 3 cinnamon sticks, and 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract into the saucepan. You can also add nutmeg, allspice, star anise, or your favorite fall spices.

Step 2:

Fill the pan with water, then place over heat. Bring it to a boil. Once it is boiling, reduce it to the lowest temperature so it simmers slowly. It can last up to 24 hours on your stovetop. If you are not adding fresh fruit and just using peels, it can last up to 4 days.

What you need to do is replenish the water every 30 to 40 minutes.
