This quilt project is one of my favorite ways to reuse leftover 2 1/2″ strips and 1 1/2″ strips. It is super fun and easy to make! You don’t have to worry about cutting the strips in the right sizes. No need for measuring.

Easy String Quilt Materials

  • 2 1/2-inch colored strips or 1 1/2-inch colored strips (or any size of strips you have)
  • 10″ paper piecing squares
  • glue stick

How to Make a String Quilt

Step 1:

Get two strips and place them right sides together. Place them on top of the square paper in a diagonal position from corner to corner. Sew on one edge. Press it open.

Step 2:

Take another strip and place it on top of the second strip, right sides together. Sew on the edge and press open.

Keep repeating the same process until you fill up one side. Make sure the paper is fully covered. Once done, do the exact same process on the other side.

Step 3:

Turn it over and use the paper as the cutting pattern. Trim the excess fabrics. Once you have your square, rip off the paper.

Step 4:

There are different patterns you can create with this block. You can arrange the blocks in the same direction and put sashing in between. You can also arrange four blocks like a four-patch forming a diamond.

Take note that it is the same size as a layer cake. You can cut them in half to make a half-square triangle.
