Easy Out of Time Hourglass Quilt With Jenny Doan

Hourglass patterns are one of the easiest blocks that are perfect for beginners. It is made by combining four half-square triangles to make a square. Any beginner can easily finish one block with ease. The only thing that you need to consider is the orientation of each HST. If you rotate one in the wrong direction, you will make a different pattern. You definitely don’t want that to happen.

This out of time hourglass quilt by Missouri Star is just like the original hourglass quilt block. The only difference is the small triangles on the corners. These small details surely transformed the whole quilt. The small triangles on the corner created small hourglasses at the intersection of each block, which is very cute.

Out of Time Hourglass Quilt Materials

• 1 pack of 10″ print squares
• 1 pack of 10″ background squares
• 3/4 yard of inner border
• 1 3/4 yard of outer border
• 3/4 yard of binding
• 8 yards of backing

How to Make Out of Time Hourglass Quilt

Step 1:

Get a print square and background square. Place them right sides together and sew all the way around with 1/4″ seam allowance.

Step 2:

Cut diagonally in both directions from corner to corner. Press them open toward the dark side to get four HSTs.

Step 3:

Arrange the four half-square triangles to make an hourglass pattern. See the photo below for reference. Sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance just like a four patch. Make sure to line the seams. Press it open.

Step 4:

Cut 2 1/2″ squares from the background and border fabric. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each one. Place a background square on each colored corner, then colored square on each background corner. Sew directly on the diagonal. Trim 1/4″ away from the seam, then press open.

You need to make 6 rows with 6 blocks each. Make sure to arrange them in the same direction.
