Step 2:

Get all 20 pieces of 1 1/2″ squares and make a diagonal line from corner to corner for each one on the wrong side.

Step 3:

Get the 4 pieces of 1 1/2″ squares and place them on the corners of the center squares, right sides together. They should form a diamond in the center. Next, place the white 1 1/2″ squares on the outside corners of the colored squares and add a square to each side of those with the lines forming a triangle. See the photo below for reference.

Step 4:

Sew the small white and colored squares first directly on the lines. Once done, trim off the excess, then press them open.

Step 5:

Sew the rows together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press the seams of the first and third rows in the same direction and the middle in the opposite direction. Once done, sew the rows together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Press it flat, then trim it into a 9 1.2″ square.

For the sashings, you need 2″ wide strips the same length as your block. Arrange the blocks together, then put the sashing in between each piece.
