When it comes to prolonging the life of food and groceries, we tend to store them in places where they are kept in good condition for a long time. Most commonly we store it in the fridge, but not every food should be stored in the refrigerator because instead of prolonging its life you might only be doing the opposite and at the same time leading them to rot or go bad. Learn which food you shouldn’t put in the fridge with this video tutorial by Natural Ways on YouTube.
1.) Banana
They retain nutrients better when they are stored outside of the fridge and according to experts, they should be kept in the counter until they ripen. The reason for this is that the cold temperature slows down the ripening process while the moisture and darkness of the fridge cause rotting.
2.) Onion
When they are stored in the fridge, they tend to become moldy and soft, and according to experts, unpeeled onions should be kept out of plastic bags or refrigerators because they require air exposure for maximum life. On the other hand, peeled onions should be placed in a covered container before placing them in the fridge.
3.) Garlic
They tend to get moldy and rubbery when stored in the fridge, and it also causes them to sprout. What’s even worse is the fact that they rarely change in appearance which means that you will never know if they are still good unless you start cutting them open.
4.) Citrus Fruits
Oranges or lemons are types of citrus fruit that require natural temperature to ripen which is why they shouldn’t be stored in the fridge because it can hamper the process. Storing them in the fridge also causes them to have spots and dull skin.

5.) Eggplant
They are temperature sensitive which is why keeping them in a fridge can harm them. Once the temperature drops below 50°F, the eggplants can get damaged in terms of flavor and texture. You should also make sure to store them separately from other fruits and veggies as eggplants are highly sensitive to ethylene which can accelerate the ripening process. If you do need to place them in the fridge, then just make sure to use them immediately after taking them out.
6.)Honey
Honey will usually stay good for as long as possible so storing them in the fridge or cooler isn’t really needed anymore. This is a naturally preserved food so it needs no help, in fact, placing them in the fridge will only speed up the sugar crystallization process resulting in the honey becoming dough-like which will make them hard or nearly impossible to scoop or use.
7.) Pickles
Pickles already contain high preservatives on their own and they really don’t need to be stored in the fridge as they won’t go bad that easily. Place them in the kitchen counter or your cabinet instead and free up some space on your fridge for other food that needs preserving.
