You probably already made an Ohio star before, but have you tried the traditional pattern? It’s a little bit different, but still easy to make! The one that we all know uses the flying geese method, but this one is going to use a technique called quarter-square triangles. It’s very simple as you only need to combine two half-square triangles.

Start by drawing a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of all C squares.
Get a B square and place it right side down on to a C square. Sew on both sides of the drawn line with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Cut directly on the line, set the seams, and press them open. You have 2 half-square triangles. Trim into 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ squares. Repeat the same process with C and D squares.
Get a C/B HST and a C/D HST and place them right sides together with the seams aligned. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner across the two colors, then sew 1/4″ on both sides of the drawn line. Cut directly on the line and press open. Make four hour glass blocks. Trim each one to 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″.
Assemble the blocks just like in the photo below.
