To make this bag, you’ll only need two pieces of rectangular fabric and two straps. It’s the ideal project for using leftover fabrics from past sewing projects. Easy DIY Tote Bag Materials

  • 2 pieces of 31 1/2″ x 19 1/2″ fabric (1 outside, 1 lining)
  • 2 pieces of 15 1/2″ straps

How to Make a DIY Shopping Bag

Step 1:

From the upper corners of the lining fabric, measure 5 1/2″ from the top down. Next, from the bottom corners, measure 5 1/2″ from the bottom up.

Step 2:

Get one strap and pin in place on the two marks on one side. Do the same for the other strap on the other side.

Step 3:

Place the outside fabric on top right side down. Sew all around the edges, but leave an opening on one long side. Trim the corners. Flip it right side out through the opening. Close the opening.

Step 4:

Top stitch all around the edges.

Step 5:

Measure 2 1/2″ from the corners, top down and bottom up, just like in step 1. Connect the mark from one side to the other side, making two long lines on the top and bottom. Fold on the lines and press with an iron. Top stitch on the edges.

Step 6:

Flip it so the outside fabric is facing up and open the folds. Fold it in half, then sew the edges together.

Step 7:

Pinch the ends to form pointed edges, then sew on the lines to make boxed corners. Sew the tips flat on the sides.

Step 8:

Flip it right side out and you are done.
