What are Crepe Paper Flowers?

Crepe paper has unique characteristics, making it perfect for crafting realistic flowers. It has that distinctive crinkled texture, or some people call as “grain”, that mimics the natural texture of flower petals. The said feature also provides a degree of stretch, which allows you to curve, cup, and fold the paper.

You can also create these flowers using tissue paper. But if you want them to last a long time, I suggest using crepe paper instead. They are stronger than you think. It holds its form well, which means the flowers won’t fall apart easily.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Preparing the crepe paper

Cut the crepe paper into 3.9 in by 12 in rectangles. You need 12 pieces to make one flower. The grain direction must be parallel to the short side of the rectangle.

Step 2: Making the petals

Get three rectangles of crepe paper. Stack them and place them on a flat surface with the short side facing towards you. Fold in a zigzag pattern, also known as an accordion fold.

Secure the folds with floral wire by loosely wrapping and twisting it. Do not tighten it yet.

Step 4: Creating the Stem and Finishing

You can just wrap the floral wire stem with floral tape. But I opted for a paper stem. Simply cut a rectangular piece of green paper and roll it diagonally to form a tube. Glue the end to secure.

Creative Ideas and Variations

For a more realistic flower, use floral wire as the stem, wrapped with floral tape. Make sure it is sturdy enough to hold the flower. Crepe paper can also be used to create realistic leaves.
