Materials:

  • 1 bundle (forty-two 10″ squares) of layer cake
  • rotary cutter
  • cutting mat
  • sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

To start, subcut one 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle, four 2 1/2″ squares, and two 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles with each 42-count 10″ square. Repeat this to all of your forty-two 10″ squares. Once you have all the subcut pieces, rotate all of the prints around and sew everything back together again. First, sew 2 1/2″ squares to the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, then 2 1/2″ squares on the other side of the unit. Once done, sew the two pieced rectangles together, then sew the large 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle. Your final block should measure 8 1/2″ square. Repeat these steps until you have forty-two quilt blocks.

Step 2

Once you have all the quilt blocks, lay them out in a 6 x 7 block layout with the odd rows having 4 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangles on top. For the even rows, you’ll rotate the blocks 180 degrees so the scrappy portion is on top. Sew your blocks into rows, then sew those rows together to complete the quilt top.
