How to Quilt As You Go Any Block

Step 1:

Take your block and take a half-an-inch bigger piece of batting to put underneath. Center it on the wrong side of your background square. Sew all around the edges as close as you can. You can use straight stitch or zigzag stitch.

Cut the border about an inch all the way around. Do the same process for all your blocks. Make sure they all have the same size.

Step 2:

Place two blocks together, and make sure they are facing in the right direction, wrong sides together. Line them up and stitch right along the sewn line. Just about an inch in. Be sure to look at the other side to make sure you aren’t sewing into that block. Press the seam allowances to open.

Step 3:

When you have embroidery that comes right out to the edge, you want to take as small a seam as possible. Fold the border as far as it can go, then lay it over the top. Top stitch straight down the top. Do the same to the other side.

Repeat the same process for the other blocks.

For the next row, do the same steps. Pull the border, fold it once, and fold it over again. Sew it down.
