Materials:

  • 10″ x 10″ squares layer cakes
  • fabrics (fat quarter)
  • rotary cutter
  • blades

Directions:

Step 1

Put half of your layer cakes on the wrong side, then from corner to corner, draw a line on each at a diagonal. Now, with the batch you just drew a line on, place one square on top of the other 10″ print square, right sides together. Then, sew a 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of the line. After this, cut the line and press open. You now have two large half-square triangles. Repeat this step to all of your print 10″ squares. Now, if you’re using a background 10″ square, you are going to need to trim them down to a 9 & 1/2″ square. But if you’re using yardage, you can just go ahead and cut your yardage into a 9 & 1/2″ strips by with a fabric, then sub-cut those into 9 & 1/2″ squares. Next, with your background on the wrong side of the fabric, draw a line at a diagonal from corner to corner with a pencil. Now with those backgrounds (9 & 1/2″ squares) place one square on top of the other half-square triangles.

Step 2

Make sure your diagonal seams from both your half-square triangle blocks are opposite of the diagonal that you just drew on your background square. Once again sew a 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of that line you drew, then cut on the line and press open. You will now have two half-square triangles. Repeat all of these steps to those background squares. Once you’re finished, square up your squares to a 9″ square. Now, take four of those half-square triangles that you made and rotate them to form a jumbo hourglass block. Sew your half-square triangles to form a row, then lastly, sew the rows together to complete your jumbo hourglass block. Keep repeating all these steps until you’ve made enough hourglass blocks for the quilt size that you are making. Once all of your blocks are made, you’re just going to lay your quilt out and you’re going to start by rotating every other block, then sew your blocks together to form rows, then sew your rows together to complete your quilt top.
