Materials:

  • (click here for the free pattern)
  • seventy-eight 5″ x 10″ rectangles

set aside:

48 – 5″ x 10″ rectangles (fabric A)

24 – 5″ x 10″ rectangles (fabric B)

  • 5 1/2 yards of background fabric
  • 7/8 yard binding
  • 5 1/4 yards backing

Cutting:

cut the six remaining 5″ x 10″ rectangles into:

  • 12 – 5″ squares (fabric C)

cut background fabric into:

  • 96 – 3″ x 10″ rectangles (fabric D)
  • 24 – 2″ x 10″ rectangles (fabric E)
  • 8 – 3″ x 17″ rectangles (fabric F)
  • 5 – 3″ x WOF strips (fabric G)
  • 9 – 5 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric H)

cut binding into:

  • 9 – 2 1/2″ WOF strips (fabric I)

Directions:

Step 1

To start, cut all the fabric requirements and label them accordingly. Now, make the corner unit first. Lay one fabric D to the top and bottom of fabric A, and sew them together, then press toward lighter fabric. After this, find the center by folding the block on both sides, then place a square ruler on top, centering into the center crease, then cut on all sides. Make 48 of these blocks.

Step 2

Next, make the center unit. Take fabric B and fabric E, sew them together, then press toward the lighter fabric. Once done, cut it in half. Make 48 of these blocks.

Step 3

Now, assemble the block. Lay one fabric C in the center, four center units on each side, then corner units to each four corners. (See the image below for the placements of each unit.) Sew each row, then sew those rows together to complete the block. Trim the block to 17″ square afterward. Make 12 of these for the quilt top.

Step 4

Now, put the quilt top together. Make four rows with three blocks on each, placing fabric F in between each block. Sew these rows together to complete the quilt top.
