Jelly Roll 18 Patch Quilt Tutorial

If you’re new to quilting, you’ll gonna love this jelly roll 18-patch quilt from Material Girl Quilts on Youtube. This project is so quick and easy to make that only requires one jelly roll or 40 pieces of strips. It’s the perfect project for beginners, especially if you like to make an XL twin quilt or a throw quilt. Watch the video tutorial below for the step-by-step instructions.

Materials:

For a 48″ x 60″ lap quilt:

• 1 jelly roll (or 40 pcs. 2 & 1/2″ x WOF strips)
• 3 yards of backing fabric
• 1/2 yard binding fabric

Directions:

Step 1

First, separate your 40 strips into 20 different pairs. Take two different strips to create a pair and it’s best if you have a nice contrast between the two strips for your pair. What you’ll do then with each pairing, you will sew them together along the length to create a set. Once that’s all sewn together, you will then cut this long set into three different 13 & 1/2″ segments but first, you will need to cut off the selvage edge. After cutting, you now have three sections that are 13 & 1/2″ long. The next thing you’ll do is sew these together to make a block.

Step 2

After sewing, cut the block into three different segments that are 4 & 1/2″ wide. Now, after cutting, take your center section and flip it in the opposite direction. Sew these together into different columns and that will be your completed block. Once this block is complete, it will measure 12 & 1/2″ square. You will repeat this process with all of your pairings to create a total of 20 blocks. You will lay out your blocks into five rows of four blocks each and the finished quilt will measure 48″ x 60″.
