How To Shrink A Shirt At Home

Do your old shirts not fit anymore or have you bought a new one and want to shrink it a bit just to lessen the awkward feeling when you wear it? Here’s a method that you can try to make your clothes somehow smaller and hopefully fit you. It is recommended that you try this hack on old clothes to test it out first as results may vary depending on the shirt’s material and color. Materials:
- A large pot
- Water
- Salt
- Slotted spoon
Directions:
Step 1
Place a pot on a stove over medium to high heat, then fill it with enough water to submerge the shirt later, add a little bit of salt (this will help reduce the shirt from bleeding as much as possible), and bring it to a boil. Once the water is boiling, you can get your shirt wet, then put it in the pot, and push it in as much as you can using a slotted spoon. Getting your shirt wet before putting it in the pot will help the shirt avoid soaking up all of the boiling water which will leave you not enough to shrink the shirt.

Step 2
Cover the pot, then let the shirt boil for a few minutes depending on how much you want it to shrink and on the type of the shirt’s fabric. In this video tutorial, the sweater was left in the boiling water for about an hour making sure to check and submerge the floating shirt from time to time. After a few minutes of boiling, turn off the heat, then remove your shirt from the pot, and press it to squeeze out as much water as you can. Put the shirt in a dryer and start drying it, then try it on. The results of this method will vary depending on the fabric as well as the bleeding of the shirt, newer shirts will tend to bleed more than old ones.
