Step 1
Draw your sunflower petal template on paper. From the edge of the paper measure out 6 inches wide, mark where it ends then draw a straight line down and across. On the horizontal line, mark one end with 1 inch on each side while the other end with ½ inch. Draw a straight line and connect these marks with each other. Cut this template out and place it on top of your yellow fabric, then start cutting them out as well. Once done cutting your strips, fold the wider or 2 inches end in half, then sew it across with a ¼ inch seam allowance. Flip it right side out and poke the pointed center nicely. Once done sewing each end of the strips and they are all pointed, divide them into 4 even batches.

Step 2
Work on each batch, start by stacking 2 pieces of strips evenly with their right sides together, then sew one side with a ¼ inch seam allowance, repeat the process to all batches of petals. Sew and join all 4 units to create a full circle of petals. Cut out a brown fabric for the center of the petals, then sew it on. Lay the sunflower on top of your background fabric, pin each petal in place, then sew along the outer edges of the flower with a topstitch. Trim the fabric located in the center and avoid cutting the flower, leaving only the outer fabric. Lastly, sew it onto your outer fabric, you can attach a batting at the center and create swirled stitches on top if you’d like.
