Materials:

  • 5 inches rigid putty knife
  • Wallpaper scoring tool
  • Pressure sprayer
  • Hot water from the tap or electric kettle
  • Vinegar
  • Fabric softener
  • Screwdriver
  • Safety glasses
  • Painter’s plastic tarp
  • Painter’s tape
  • Garbage can with can liner

Directions:

Step 1

Lay down a plastic painter’s tarp on the floor and secure it with painter’s tape. You also need to cover your wall outlets with painter’s tape to protect them from getting wet. Next, grab your large, rigid putty knife or scraper, then look for the edge of your wallpaper, and start prying it up with the scraper. Peel them off if you can and if they come off easily. Using light pressure, run the scoring tool all over the entire surface of the wallpaper. Go ahead and prepare your hot water solution, there are two methods that you can use depending on the type of wallpaper that you have. You can mix ¼ fabric softener with ¾ hot water or mix 1/3 vinegar with 2/3 hot water. Transfer this solution to a sprayer, then start wetting the walls, you might want to put on some goggles to protect your eyes.

Step 2

After 2 to 3 minutes of soaking the wallpaper with the solution, use your scraper to pry the corner of the wet wallpaper and remove it from the wall. Pull the wallpaper in large sheets and drop it onto your trash can. Proceed to work on the area near your electrical outlets, make sure to turn off the power to the outlet of your electrical box to avoid getting shocked. For the leftovers, simply repeat the process of soaking them with the hot water solution. Scrape and remove the bits of glue as well, then use a clean and wet rag to wipe the wall down as you go.
