Machine quilting big quilt projects may seem impossible, but it’s actually achievable. It’s hard – that’s a fact, but did you know there’s an easier way to do it? I’ve been doing big quilts on my sewing machine for years, and I learned it all from Angela Walters on Youtube. Her tutorial on how to quilt large quilts on a sewing machine is really helpful, especially if you’re just learning how to piece your big quilt blocks on your sewing machine. It’s now easier for me to make large quilts, all thanks to her simple and straightforward tutorial. Wanna learn how? Watch the video tutorial below for the step-by-step instructions.
First of all, determine how you going to work with your quilt. For this tutorial, we’re going to tackle it block by block. Once you know how big the sections are going to be, cut your backing and batting pieces. First, cut the batting to the finished size of your block. For the backing, cut it much larger than your quilt. Now, layer them together starting with backing, the batting, and the quilt block. Baste them together how you like.

For the quilting, remember that don’t quilt all the way to the edge of the block, leave at least a quarter to half because this is where you’re going to join the blocks together. Once you finish quilting your block, trim the backing fabric so that it’s the same size as the quilt block.
Before you sew the blocks together, carefully fold back the backing piece and pin it down. Now, flip it over and put its right sides together with the other quilted piece. Line up the raw edge of the tops, then clip to hold it in place. Take it to the machine and carefully sew the pieces together. For the back side, press the seams on one side, then fold the other side for a nice finished edge. Press it right in place, then hand stitches it close.
