Scared of fireworks? Don’t like loud noises? This might be the perfect alternative for you! Some people experience anxiety and distress when exposed to loud noises; that’s why they prefer being inside during New Year or Fourth of July. Not only kids experience this, but also adults. In Melissa Metrano‘s DIY project, there will be no explosions, just pure magic. Enjoy looking at the different colors mixing and swirling without the loud cracking or popping sounds.

Some of you might be familiar with this project as it is sometimes done in science experiments. People also call this a fireworks in a jar experiment. This project only requires simple materials such as oil, food coloring, and water. No need for fire to start it up. It is completely safe, so you don’t have to worry. Since the ink is heavier than oil, the colored drops will begin to sink. Once they reach the water, the food coloring starts to dissolve, creating colorful fireworks. Try doing this experiment with the kids this January 1st.

Fill a glass with water and set it aside.
Add two tablespoons of olive oil in a container.
Add a few drops of red, orange, and blue food coloring to the oil. Using a fork, slightly mix the colored dots and make them into smaller dots.
Slowly pour the oil and food coloring mixture into the water. Some fireworks will go off right away. Wait until the food coloring starts to go down.
