What I love about grits is that it can be served sweet or savory for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. A Southern breakfast will not be complete without it! You can top it with eggs or crumbled sausage for your first meal of the day or with vegetables for the perfect side dish for dinner. There are a lot of recipes with grits to choose from that you will surely love, but first, you need to learn how to make them. Here’s how to perfectly cook this Southern classic by Southern Living.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 cup of grits (classic stone-ground)
  • butter
  • salt

The classic stone-ground variety is milled in the traditional way of crushing dried white or yellow corn kernels between stone wheels. This technique brings out nutty, toasty, and earthy flavors. They usually take a long time to cook, but this technique will lessen the cooking time.

Instructions

Step 1:

Fill a medium saucepan with four cups of water and place it over heat. Bring it to a boil.

Step 2:

Once your water comes to a boil, you want to slowly and gradually whisk in the grits. Once they’re all in the pot, whisk for 30 seconds. This keeps the grit from clumping and gives you a smooth silky finished product. Let it come to a boil.

Step 3:

Once boiling, cover the pot with the lid, reduce the heat to low, and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes or until they’re tender. Covering the pot will cut the cooking time in half.
