Whether you’re an eco-friendly crafter, a DIY hobbyist, or simply looking to reduce your carbon footprint, making fabric from plastic grocery bags is a rewarding and impactful project. Learn how to do it by watching the video tutorial below for the step by step instructions.

You’ll Need:

  • 5 plastic bags
  • scissors
  • bath towel
  • packing paper
  • parchment paper
  • iron, for pressing

Directions:

Step 1

To start, flatten the plastic grocery bags, then cut off the ends. Open the bag in a tube, and then cut it into two pieces. Repeat it with the rest of the plastic bags. Next, layer a bath towel and packing paper on your working surface, then start stacking the ten layers of plastic (hide the printed plastic inside the layers.) After this, cut some colored plastics and scatter them on top to make a pattern.

Step 2

Once done, carefully place a piece of parchment paper over the plastic, then iron the top on medium heat slowly and steadily. Repeat it on the other side. (You can make different patterns with different colors of plastic; be creative with your plastic fabric!) You can use this to make some wonderful DIYs like an apron, bags, and even a clay pot cover!
