I have been a fan of chalk paint ever since I went to my friend’s house in Dallas and saw the amazing transformation she had done to her furniture using chalk paint. Her furniture was all traditional mahogany wood and looked rather dark. All her pieces were well made and quite gorgeous but the overall vibe was a bit dark and heavy. When I walked into her new house and saw the transformation, I was completely in awe. She had used Annie Sloan chalk paint to customize every piece of furniture she had. The overall effect was light and airy, a true farmhouse effect that looked so trendy and up to the minute. I don’t know if anyone has ever shopped for Annie Sloan’s chalk paint, it is really the best chalk paint around, but it also can be pricy and hard to find. For those reasons, I started searching Youtube for recipes to make my own chalk paint and I found a great tutorial by Mr. DIY Dork. This tutorial explains exactly how to make chalk paint and isn’t difficult at all.

Materials:

  • 1 part Plaster of Paris
  • 3 parts flat (or eggshell) acrylic latex paint
  • Mix with a fork (it would be useful to use an old immersion blender if you have one that you can dedicate to paint only)

Directions:

First, you will mix a Plaster of Paris slurry that you will add to your flat latex paint.
