I love all these new and exciting DIY concrete ideas, but this self-watering planter was really the coolest project I have ever seen. I found this wonderful video tutorial by Evan And Kaitlyn on Youtube yesterday and could not wait to share this amazing idea. The YouTubers, Evan, and Kaitlyn are real experts, and they use a 3D printer to make their molds. You could use a plastic jar or yogurt container for molds if you don’t have a 3D printer, any plastic container will work fine. The only thing to keep in mind is that the bottom of the top planter with the wick must sit comfortably on top of the reservoir. The cotton rope wick can be found at Michael’s Craft Store, where you can use the coupons on Michael’s app to get huge savings on almost any item in the store.

Materials:

  • Quickcrete Vinyl Concrete Patcher
  • Smooth on silicone
  • Concrete sealer
  • Cotton rope (to use as a wick)
  • A drill
  • Masonry drill bit
  • 3D printer Taz6 (you can bypass this step and use a yogurt container or plastic jar as a mold)
  • Matterhackers Black PLA
  • Automotive Primer (to smooth prints)
  • Sandpaper
  • Superglue
  • Sanding sponge
  • Safety glasses
  • Respirator

Directions:

First, you will drill two holes in the bottom of the planter ad install your cotton rope wick. You can use a lighter to burn the ends so the rope doesn’t fray. The rope wick will pull all the water the plant needs for survival from the reservoir underneath the planter.

Drill holes in the bottom of a planter and use a wick to make a hydroponic self watering planter

Then you just set the plant inside the reservoir and make sure it’s topped up with water.
