Instead of buying a high-end tufted bench that costs around $400 or so, just create your own DIY version that costs only around $30! This bench is more inexpensive, simple to make, and pretty sturdy for its price. You can also use a fabric that you quilted for this project so you don’t have to buy from the store. Learn how to easily build this with Blondesigns video tutorial on YouTube.

Materials:

  • Staple gun
  • 3/8” or 10mm staples
  • Drill
  • ½” screws
  • 1½” screws
  • Scissors
  • Wood glue
  • 4 pieces of 2” corner braces
  • 6 pieces of pool noodles
  • 2 yards of fabric
  • 3 wood panels at 15”x 15”
  • Wood crossbeam at 2”x 6”x 14¼”

Directions:

Step 1

The total dimensions of your wooden bench should be the same as the total length of your pool noodle. Put the three wooden panels together using wood glue, then attach the corner braces to secure and for a stronger hold, and place a 2 by 6 piece of wood at the center to serve as a temporary brace while the glue is drying. Cut the fabric about 2 inches wider on all sides than the size of the bench itself, then remove the brace, and wrap the fabric underneath the bench. Staple it in place and make sure to pull tightly as you cover it to avoid wrinkling, then wrap the wooden brace with the same fabric, and staple it in place. Slide the brace back into the center of the bench, then attach 2 screws on each side to secure it in place.

Step 2

Flip your bench standing right up and start covering the top with the rest of the fabric. Place the fabric upside down on one edge of the bench so that their right sides are facing, then staple it in place before placing a piece of pool noodle all the way to the edge, and tucking it in tightly. Pull the fabric over and wrap the pool noodle tightly, then staple it in place starting from the center and work your way along all the edges until the pool noodle is wrapped completely. Pull the fabric open, then place another piece of pool noodle underneath, wrap, and staple in place as you did with the first piece. Continue this process with the rest of the pool noodles, then staple the bottom edges underneath, and create a cover for the bottom using leftover fabric.
