Avocado is one of my favorite fruits to eat and to use in a recipe because they make any food so much better than they already are. Since I love them so much and it is also the season for growing various veggies and fruits, I thought why not try to grow my own avocados at home? That’s when I stumbled upon this video tutorial by Daisy Dawes on Youtube and I learned how to grow them from seeds in a glass!

What you’ll need:

  • Avocado
  • Toothpicks
  • Paper towels
  • Glass
  • Potting soil
  • Pot
  • Water

Directions:

Step 1

Get a good and ripe avocado (larger ones work best but you can still use small avocados), then cut it open horizontally or across to make sure that you do not damage the bottom of the seed, and gently remove the seed from the fruit. Give the seed a good wipe using a paper towel, then peel the skin off, and insert some toothpicks around the pointed part of the seed as shown in the video, make sure to not insert the toothpicks deep into the seed.

Step 2

Place the seed in the glass using the toothpicks to hold the seed hanging, then fill the glass with water until it reaches halfway the seed, and leave it in a place with direct light. Check the water level every couple of days, then once it goes down, change the water to a fresh one, and check after 2 months if the seed has sprouted.

Step 3

You can continue growing seeds with sprouts but those that didn’t sprout at all will not work, then once the seed has grown a stem, you can transplant it to a pot. Fill a pot with potting soil, then dig a hole at the center, and bury the seed halfway removing the toothpicks as well, avocado seeds don’t like soil that is too wet or too dry.

Step 3

Water the soil to let it settle around the seed and make sure to not push the seed down to avoid damaging the stem. Once it has grown leaves, pinch the tip of the leaf at the very center to make a growing tip, then make sure that when you water the seed, water it all the way down the soil because this type of seed is sensitive to mineral deposits. Once the plant has adjusted to the soil, place it in your garden where there is a lot of sunlight.
