What do you do to find a dropped item on the floor? You probably get down close to the floor, scanning the area where you think the item fell, or use your hands to feel around. Sure, you can find it that way, but I am pretty sure it will take you a minute or so, especially on a patterned floor. While a flashlight may help, using it the wrong way may not be as effective as you think.

Tricks for Finding Dropped Items

Step 1:

Grab an LED flashlight. You can also use your phone’s flashlight.

Step 2:

Turn off the lights and turn your flashlight on.

Step 3:

It’s all about the angle. Do not hold it perpendicular to the floor, you will not find what you are looking for that way, especially on a patterned floor.

Hold your flashlight parallel to the floor instead. Rotate it slowly in a full 360 degrees. The light will hit the edge of the item causing a flashback which is similar to a lighthouse.

You need to go as close to the floor so that you are behind the flashlight. You don’t have to line in your stomach but get in your knees.

This method works best on a flat smooth floor but is also effective on a textured floor.
