Have you always wanted to learn how to dye fabric but are scared to try fearing that you might just mess the fabric up. Then, this video tutorial can be a great help for you! This very easy trick is taught by OnlineFabricStore via YouTube, if you want to learn it now, then proceed to read the instructions below.

Materials:

  • Rit dye
  • Pre-washed fabric
  • Buckets
  • Gloves
  • Salt
  • A stick or spoon, for stirring

Directions:

Step 1

Before you start working on your fabric, cover your workspace with a large plastic, then wear some gloves as well. Wash the fabric you’re going to dye to get better coverage, you also need to dampen the cloth or fabric a little bit so that it can soak up the color faster with fewer bubbles. Fill the bucket with very hot water, then start mixing the dye colors, start with the lightest color first, and slowly add in your black or darker shades. To get a darker shade of navy blue, you need to add a splash of black, then add about ¼ cup of salt per ½ pound of fabric.

Step 2

After mixing the dye bath, soak the fabric in it making sure to mush it all around and that there are no bumps or bubbles in the fabric. Let it sit for about half an hour to have a nice and rich color. After soaking the fabric for half an hour, check if it has reached the desired shade. Once the fabric is ready, remove it from the dye bath gently, then wring it to get rid of any excess dyes, and put it into a separate bucket. Rinse the fabric with hot water, then as the water starts to turn clear, you can add some cold water. You can wash your dyed fabric however you like, but if you want to keep the fabric looking clean and pristine, then hand wash it gently in cold water. You may also want to use a fixative to reduce color bleeding.
