Looking for a modern quilt pattern? Try this hexi gems applique by Missouri Star. It’s a cute and easy pattern you can make using 5″ squares and 10″ squares. Imagine using the same colors for each gem. I am sure it will turn out beautifully. And if you look closely, periwinkle shapes are formed in the center of each gem. It’s definitely an interesting pattern.

Do not be intimated by the applique method. It’s actually simple. I bet you’ll buy a half-hexi ruler just for this project. You can also use the hexagon ruler to make a half hexi. You just need to cut it in half. Learn how to make this pattern by watching the video below.

Easy Hexi Gems Applique Materials

  • 2 packs of 5″ squares
  • 1 pack of 42 – 10″ background squares
  • 2 1/2 yards of heat and bond
  • half-hexi ruler

How to Make Hexi Gems Applique

Step 1:

Lay one 5″ square on top of your heat n’ bond and press with an iron. Trim the excess heat n’ bond. Cut it in half.

Place the long edge of the half-hexi on the pinked edge. Trim the excess.

Repeat for the remaining 5″ squares.

Step 2:

Get one 10″ background square and two pieces of half hexi pieces. Peel the back of each one and place them on the background square like in the photo below. The corners should touch. Place an iron on top and set it in place.

Stitch around the edges of the half-hexi pieces using the blanket stitch. This will be block A. You need to make 20 pieces of this block.

Step 3:

Take another background square and 2 pieces of half-hexi pieces. Peel the back of each one and place them on the background square like in the photo below. Press with an iron. Stitch all the way around the half-hexi pieces. This will be block B. You need 20 pieces of this block.

Step 4:

Make 7 rows with 6 blocks each. You need 4 pieces of block A and 2 pieces of background square for the first and last rows. For the middle rows, use 4 pieces of block B for the middle ones and 2 pieces of block A for the sides.
