Materials:

Lap Size:

  • 16 fat quarters
  • 2 2/3 yards background and borders
  • 5/8 yard binding
  • 3 3/4 yards backing
  • (click here for the free pattern)
  • (click here for other quilt sizes)

Cutting instructions for the print:

  • fabric A: 2 – 5″ squares
  • fabric B: 8 – 3″ squares
  • fabric C: 4 – 2 1/2″ squares

Cutting instructions for the background:

  • fabric D: 2 – 5″ squares
  • fabric E: 8 – 3″ squares
  • fabric F: 4 – 2 1/2″ squares

Directions:

Step 1

Before starting, make sure to cut all the fabric requirements for the quilt. Now, take one fabric A square and one fabric B square. Put them right sides together, and draw a line from corner to corner. From that line, draw another two lines, 1/4″ away from the center. Stitch on the outer lines, then cut directly to the center line. After this, press towards the darker fabric. Make four of these, then trim them down.

Step 2

Next, take a fabric F square, draw a line from corner to corner, then on the darker side fabric of the half-square triangle, pin the square. After this, stitch on that line, remove the pins, and trim a 1/4″ away. Press into one side, then press open. Repeat these and make a total of four units per block. Next, grab one fabric B square and one fabric E square, and just repeat the earlier steps from fabrics A and B. For each block, make a total of sixteen 2″ finished half-square triangles.

Step 3

Now, start assembling the block into quadrants. Lay down the pieces according to the free pattern, sew them together, and then press. Make four of these. After this, assemble the unit, laying the blocks according to the free pattern. Sew these together, and press.
