Have charm packs or precut 5-inch squares at home? Make them into this adorable grand square quilt by Missouri Star. It’s a beginner-friendly design that you can easily make on a weekend. One thing I love about this block is the other pattern you can create with it. Just by cutting it into four, you could make the di si do design, which looks like twisted shapes. Watch the video below for the full instructions.

Instructions:

Step 1:

Select 4 pieces of 5″ squares that are the same. Stack 2 pieces together then cut them in half. Get another one and cut into half twice to get 4 pieces of 2 1/2″ squares. For the last one, cut it into a 4 1/2″ square.

Step 2:

For the background fabric, you need 2 1/2″ squares and 4 1/2″ squares.

Step 3:

Take 4 pieces of 2 1/2″ white squares and 4 pieces of printed 2 1/2″ squares. Stitch each background square to the printed square. Once done, press them open.

Step 4:

Cut the 4 pieces of printed rectangles into 4 1/2″ by 2 1/2″ pieces. Sew each one to the side of the 2-patch. Press them open. Now you have the corner blocks.

Step 5:

Arrange the blocks. Place the printed 4 1/2″ square in the center, 4 1/2″ white squares on each side, and lastly the 4 corner blocks. Sew them in rows of three. When sewing, make sure that the white parts touch. Next, sew the three rows together. Iron the top, then flip it over, and press the seams. You need 4 blocks across and 4 down, for a total of 16 blocks. The outer border measures 5 inches.

You can also make another pattern from the block – it is called the “do si do”. Just cut the block into half twice to make 4 small squares, then flip the opposite two.
