The flying geese blocks are made with half-square triangles. Jenny Doan will teach you how to make 8 HSTs all at once using the magic 8 method. The flying geese blocks will be the star points. For the 16-patch quilt, you don’t have to cut all the small squares one by one. You will learn the easier way to make four patches using a simple technique and then use them to make the 16-patch block.

Get one background square and one colored square. Lay them right sides together. Draw a diagonal line corner to corner in both directions to make an X. Sew 1/4″ away from either side of the lines. Cut directly on the lines and in half vertically and horizontally. Press them open to get 8 pieces of HSTs. Square them into 4 1/2″ squares.
Sew the HSTs in pairs with the whites in the middle just like a flying geese.
For the scrappy four patch, you need a couple of layer packs and stack them together. Cut into half horizontally and vertically to 4 pieces of 5″ squares for each square. You are going to do this for 20 of your squares.
Take 2 pieces of 5″ squares that are contrasting and place them right sides together. Sew just on the sides. Repeat with the other squares. Cut each one in half then iron them open. Sew them together end to end. Make sure they line up. Press flat.
Cut 2 1/2″ from the end of the sewn strip. Fold the end over and cut 2 1/2″ inches to get a four patch. Repeat with the remaining strip.
Sew four pieces of four patches together to make a 16 block. Press it open.
Arrange the pieces just like in the photo below, then add 4 1/2″ background squares on the corner.
