If you’re looking for a stash-buster quilt project, try making this four-patch squared layer cake from Moonkin Stitchery on Youtube. This quilt pattern is perfect for beginners, but seasoned quilters will also enjoy making this, especially if you have layer cakes you want to use. Practice your skills and do this project on the weekend! Watch the video tutorial below to learn the full instructions.

Materials:

For a throw size:

  • 42 – 10″ squares or layer cake
  • 1/2  yard binding
  • 4 yards backing
  • 56″ x 64″ batting
  • (click here for the free pattern)

Directions:

Step 1

Get a stack of your layer cakes and lay them on your cutting mat. Cut a 2 & 1/2″ x 10″ strip, rotate the cutting mat, and cut another 2 & 1/2″ x 10″ strip on the opposite side. Next, working on the centerpiece, rotate the cutting mat 45 degrees counter-clockwise, then cut a 2 & 1/2″ x 5″ strip on the left side. Cut another 2 & 1/2″ x 5″ on the opposite side. Now, working on the center square, cut it in half down in the center on both sides. Set the pieces on the side, and repeat the same steps with the rest of the layer cakes. After all of your layer cakes are cut up, create a four-patch in the center using the smaller squares and sew it, then take your outer fabrics that are different print from your four-patch and sew the sides together, then the top and bottom. (Don’t forget to trim the excess fabric off.)

Step 2

Repeat the same exact steps to create more four-patch blocks for your desired quilt size. Once all of your blocks are finished, start laying your quilt out. Lay the blocks down right next to each other (the number of blocks per row will depend on what quilt size you are working in). After you laid out your quilt, sew your blocks to form rows, then sew those rows to complete your quilt top.
