Making sugar cookie icing is not as hard as you think. It’s actually easy! This recipe by Sugar Spun Run will teach you how to make it with just four ingredients. The gel food coloring and decorative sprinkles are optional, but make decorating more enjoyable and exciting.

Easy Sugar Cookie Icing Ingredients

  • 3 cups of powdered sugar (sifted)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of light corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • gel food coloring (optional)
  • candies and sprinkles for decorating (optional)

How to Make Sugar Cookie Icing

Step 1:

In a medium-sized bowl, combine powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of milk, corn syrup, and vanilla extract. Stir until well combined. If it turns too thick, add more milk, a teaspoon at a time, until it has a pipeable consistency. If you pour too much milk, add powdered sugar until you get the desired texture.

Step 2:

If you are coloring the frosting, divide the mixture into bowls and color as desired. Start with a few drops first, then adjust as needed.

Step 3:

Transfer the frosting to a piping bag with a piping tip. Alternatively, you can use a sealable bag and snip the corner off.

Step 4:

Pipe the frosting on your cookies and then decorate with sprinkles and decorative candies.

Step 5:

Once done decorating, allow the cookies to harden before eating, stacking, or decorating. It may take a few hours depending on the consistency of the frosting. If you are going to make the icing ahead of time, store it in an airtight container with a sheet of cling wrap pressed directly on the surface of the icing. You can store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Before using make sure to stir it again.
