Start by warming up your milk. You can place it in the microwave for 1 minute and 45 seconds. Once it’s hot, add 3 tablespoons of butter, 4 tablespoons of shortening, and 3 tablespoons of maple syrup. Mix until everything is dissolved.
You can use your hand mixer or hands to knead the dough. But for this recipe she used her stand mixer. In the bowl of a stand mixer, add 5 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/3 cup of sugar, 2 1/4 teaspoons of yeast, and 2 teaspoons of salt. Mix all the dry ingredients.
Slowly pour the milk while mixing in low speed, followed by the egg. Mix in low speed for 3 minutes. Turn the speed to medium and allow it to continue mixing for 7 minutes. Roll it into a large ball and transfer to a greased bowl.
Add a little bit of butter on top, then cover it with a cling wrap. Place a cloth on top and put in a warm spot until it doubles in size.
Remove the dough from the ball. Fold it in to remove the air, then cut into four equal pieces. Work with one dough at a time. Make sure to keep the others covered. Form balls with each piece, then place on a baking dish. Once everything is done, cover it with cling wrap, then with cloth. Place in a warm spot and allow them to double in size.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Make the egg wash by mixing one egg with one tablespoon of water. Brush the dinner rolls with the egg wash. Place in the oven and bake for 25 minutes.
Once done baking, brush the top with melted butter. Let it rest for 10 minutes then serve.
