I’ve been looking for the perfect quilt pattern to use my fabrics with big prints, and this fat eight flip quilt from Fat Quarter Shop on Youtube is the right one. This pattern will definitely highlight those prints, and I can’t wait to try this out on the weekend. So, if you have a lot of big print fabrics or layer cakes in your stash, this might also be the quilt project you’re looking for. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step by step instructions. Thanks to Fat Quarter Shop for this gorgeous quilt project.

Materials:

  • one fat eighth bundle (or 32 – 9″ x 20″ rectangles)
  • 5/8 yard binding
  • 3 3/4 yards backing
  • (click here for the free pattern)

Cut 32 – 9″ x 20″ rectangles into:

  • 1 – 7 1/2″ x 20″ rectangle – 32 total (fabric A)

Cut binding fabric into:

  • 7 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric B)

Directions:

Step 1

Cut all 32 of your fat eighths into 7 1/2″ x 20″ rectangles. Take four of them for the first block and sew them together with a 1/4″ seam. After sewing, press everything in one direction. Make eight of these for the throw size. Once done, start subcutting. Cut these into two 7 1/2″ rectangles and one 3 1/2″ rectangle.

Step 2

After cutting, put the fabrics back the way you had them with all the fabrics going the same way, then flip the center, creating the flip. Pin in every intersection, sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press in one direction. Make eight of these for the throw size. Once you have eight, put them in a stack where all the ending seam is going in the same direction. Next, put two pieces side by side, nesting the seams. Pin them and put them together. Make four rows, then put all four rows together to complete the quilt.
