I have tried a couple of different quilts before that use only half-square triangles, and out of all of them, this zigzag quilt is my favorite. One of the main reasons why is because of how pretty it looks and I even thought initially that this was complicated to make and only expert quilters could try it.

Step 1

Cut a dark and medium fabric into 5″ squares, then stack both of them with their right sides facing, and cut them in half diagonally from corner to corner. Swap the pieces so that the dark triangle is paired with the medium triangle, then place a 7¾ x 1-inch white strip on top of the lower triangle, and make sure that the edges are lined up.

Step 2

Pin them in place, then stitch the edges with ¼ inch seam allowance, and press the fabric open. Place the other triangle on top of the strip’s other edge, then line them up and make sure their right sides are facing, and then stitch with ¼ inch seam allowance.

Step 3

Press them open, then trim off the excess, and repeat the same steps with the other set. Make more pieces, then arrange the block units together until they form a zigzag, or play with the patterns and arrange them however you want, you can also refer to the video tutorial for options.
