Make sure that your plants are properly taken care of and that they are kept warm during the cold season with these smart and inexpensive hacks by GrowVeg on YouTube. You only need a few simple materials that you can even recycle to protect your precious plants and of course, this easy-to-follow video tutorial will help you all the way through.

Materials:

  • Recycled jars, bins, or plastic bottles
  • Blue Alcathene water pipe
  • Clear plastic or horticultural fleece
  • Boards
  • Metal bars or wood stakes
  • Zip ties
  • Clips
  • Tempered glass or old windows

Directions:

Method #1: Cover the plants with jars, bins, or plastic bottles

Find any old jars, bins, or plastic bottles that you won’t be using anymore, then remove their lids, and cut the bottom of the bottles off. Use these containers to cover your plants and protect them from the cold.

Method #2: Homemade mini hoop house

You’ll need some sort of wood or metal to keep the hoop upright, simply insert them on all four corners of the plant box, then insert the pipes as shown in the video, and install a long piece of wood in the middle to make it more sturdy, use zip ties to secure them in place. Cover the hoop with clear plastic or fleece, then clip them around in place, and use boards, bricks, or wood blocks to hold the plastic or fleece down in place.

Method #3: Homemade cold frames

Find some old windows or tempered glass, then cut them in the size of your plat box, and install boards around the sides to make the headspace a bit higher. Put wood and frame the glass around, then place them on top of the plant box, and you’re done.
