Take four 2.5″ strips in different colors from your roll and line them up. Sew them together with a 1/4″ seam allowance to make a 4-unit strip. Press the seams open and the unit flat.
Rotate the strip unit. Remove the selvage edge of the fabric. Cut 8.5″ squares from the unit strip.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other colored strips.
Take a unit square, then take another unit square and place it on top with the strips in opposite directions, right sides together. Sew all the way around the edges with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Cut the block from corner to corner, creating an X. Open each one and press it flat.
Rotate the block to make it a square and arrange. Rotate the top left and bottom right so that a small triangle forms in the middle of the block. See the photo below for reference. Sew the four pieces together with a 1/4″ seam allowance and press it flat.
Repeat the steps 4 to 6 with the remaining squares. Sew the blocks together to form a quilt top.
