For this block, you’ll need 16 half-square triangles, also known as HSTs. There are different ways to make HSTs, but for this tutorial, you will learn the magic 8 method, which can make 8 HSTs at once. These will then be assembled to form a block in the shape of an 8.
From each assorted print, cut 2 pieces of 10″ x 10″ squares and cut 4 pieces of 5″ x 5″ squares.
Take 2 pieces of 10″ squares in different colors, one dark and one light, and place them right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner in both directions on the wrong side of the fabric. Sew a 1/4″ away from both sides of the diagonal lines. Cut directly on the drawn lines and down the middle horizontally and vertically. You should have 8 half-square triangles. Repeat with all the 10″ square pairing.
Place a dark 5″ square on top of a light 5″ square right sides together. Draw a diagonal line and sew with a 1/4″ seam allowance on both sides of the line. Cut directly on the drawn line to make 2 half-square triangles.
Arrange 16 half-square triangles into a block forming an 8. See the photo below for reference.
Sew them in rows first. Once done, see the rows together to make the block.
Repeat the same steps for the remaining HSTs.
