Are you looking for a project to start your quilting journey? Try this square dance quilt from Material Girl Quilts on Youtube. It’s a beginner-friendly project that uses pre-cut 10” squares. Super easy to make and will definitely be a good first quilting project. Watch the video tutorial below to learn the step-by-step instructions.

Materials:

  • 1 – 10″ pre-cut square pack
  • 3 & 1/4 yards backing fabric
  • 1/2 yard binding fabric

Directions:

Step 1

To start, lay two squares together and cut them into two 5″ x 10″ rectangles. Now you have two rectangles. Cut one of these rectangles into one 5″ square, then cut the remaining section of it into two 2 & 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles. For your second 5″ x 9″ or 10″ rectangle, cut it down to 9″. Once you’ve cut it down to 9″, you will then cut it into two 2 & 1/2″ x 9″ rectangles. So for each pre-cut square, you will end up with one 5″ square, two 2 & 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles, and two 2 & 1/2″ x 9″ rectangles. Once you’re finished cutting all 42 squares, you will select the 5″ square from one fabric and then the two small and two large rectangles from another fabric. You’ll place the small 2 & 1/2″ x 5″ rectangles on opposite sides of the square and sew along the seams, laying them right sides together. After this, press out toward the rectangles and you’ll have the first section of your block which will measure 5″ x 9″.

Step 2

Next, you will take your 9″ rectangles and sew them on opposite sides. Then, sew your 9″ rectangles on the opposite sides of your squares. Lay them right sides together and sew along the long edges and you will end with a 9″ square finished block. Now, you’re going to lay them into six blocks per row for seven rows. If you start row one with the top up on the block, you’ll have two seams to match between every block. But if you take every other block and rotate it 90 degrees, then there are no seams to match up your blocks. You will only then have to match up your seams between your rows. So for the first row, have the top of the block up, then turn it to the side, then it’s up again, and you’ll continue that same way for six blocks. And for the second row, the first block, the top is up, then you will do the top turn 90 degrees to the side. After this, rotate every other block so you don’t have to match up all of the seams between each block. Again, you will set this out and piece it together six blocks per row for seven rows.
