I have always wanted to make a placemat and some pot holders for my Mother and I’ve gone through a lot of tutorials but nothing has caught my attention like this one by Alanda Craft did. What I loved about this quilt idea is that it makes good use of fabric scraps, it does not have any complicated steps at all, and you can use this method in any sewing project you could think of. Surely, beginners in quilting will love this tutorial because of how easy and quick this block is to put together. You should definitely try this out and see for yourself.

Materials:

  • Batting fabric
  • Backing fabric
  • Fabric scraps
  • Ruler
  • Marking chalk, pen, or pencil
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors and rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • Sewing machine

Directions:

Step 1

Cut your backing and batting fabric into a 10×10-inch square or larger, whatever you prefer works, then cut the fabric scraps into 2½-inch wide strips or whatever you prefer, and cut the white fabric at 1 inch for the center. Lay your batting fabric, then draw a line diagonally from corner to corner, spray the backing with some adhesive, and lay the batting on top with the drawn side facing up. Grab a strip of fabric, then line it up on the line you drew, place another strip above it with their right sides facing, and sew them together down the side with a ¼-inch seam allowance.

Step 2

Press the fabric open using your finger, then sew the next strip repeating the same steps you did earlier, and continue until the entire half of the block is covered as shown in the video. Flip the block over, then trim off the excess fabric, turn it over, and add the white strip along the center sewing it in place with a ¼-inch seam allowance. Continue sewing strips right next to the white strip until you’ve covered the entire half. You can topstitch all around the edges or quilt it however you want.
