Easy Quarter-Square Triangle Blocks

Materials:

• one layer cake or 42 – 10″ squares
• 5/8 yard binding
• 3 1/4 yards backing

Shuffling:

• 21 – 10″ light and medium print squares (fabric A)
• 21 – 10″ dark print squares (fabric B)

Cutting:

cut the binding fabric into:

• 6 – 2 1/2″ x WOF strips (fabric C)

Directions:

Step 1

To start, sort the layer cakes into two sets of 21 prints. One set should consist of light and medium prints and the other of dark prints. (These will be fabrics A and B). Now, pick two random fabrics from stacks A and B. Put them right sides together, place a ruler corner to corner, then draw a line on each side. After this, stitch directly on these lines, then cut right on the center line. Make a total of 42 half-square triangles, then press all the seams open. Once you have 42 half-square triangles, put two squares where the seams are in the same direction, and try to alternate the darks and the lights.

Step 2

Now, find the center, make sure your seams are lined up, then put a pin in the center. Next, draw a line just like what you did in the seam guide, then stitch on these drawn lines. Cut the center afterward and press the seams open. Once you have 42 hourglass units, trim them into 8 1/2″ squares. To assemble the quilt top, make sure every seam is lined up nicely (use pins), then sew the blocks together to create the quilt top.
