I’ve been quilting for a while now and so far, one of my favorite things to do is make half-square triangles because I have so much fun piecing together different combinations of colors and patterns. Plus, there are a lot of ways to use them in a quilt block, you can even make illusion patterns out of them.

Just like this quilt block idea by Teresa DownUnder on YouTube! Using only half-square triangles and squares you can learn how to make 2 simple blocks, and they are perfect for beginners to try. Watch the video tutorial below now.
Step 1
Cut the contrasting fabrics into a rectangle at 18×12 inches, then cut the background fabric into squares at 24 x 2½ inches, and set them aside. Grab the darker rectangle fabric, then lay it down on your work surface with its right side down, and draw a grid on the back at 3-inch intervals.
Step 2
Next, draw a diagonal line across each square, then lay that fabric on top of the other fabric with their right sides facing and edges lined up nicely, and pin them securely together. Sew on each side of the diagonal lines with ¼ inch seam allowance, then cut along the horizontal lines, and then cut along the vertical lines.
Step 3
Now, cut along the diagonal lines, then unpick some of the corners as needed, and then cut off the nubs. You should have a total of 48 half-square triangles, trim each of them to 2½ inches squares, then arrange them as shown in the video, and start stitching them per row before stitching the rows to each other making sure to press the seams as you go. Watch the video tutorial to learn how to make a ribbon block using the same set of half-square triangles.
