This tutorial by CNET on YouTube is a nice method that imitates a vacuum sealer if you don’t actually have or own one. You only need a freezer bag or Ziploc bag, a large pot, and some water! It’s much easier and better than the usual way that you store food in these bags which is by squeezing out as much air as possible using only your hands. This method helps keep your food last longer and prevents them from burning in the freezer. Once you’ve learned this technique, you’ll never be able to stop doing this method when storing your food or ingredients.

Materials:

  • Ziploc bag
  • Large pot
  • Water

Directions:

Step 1

Place the food in a freezer bag or Ziploc bag, then start zipping it close but not all the way leaving about an inch of an opening at the end. Find a large container or pot and fill it with water, then slowly lower the bag into the pot of water until only the corner you left open is above the water, and then close the remaining corner of the bag. After sealing the bag, remove it from the water, then allow the bag to dry off completely.

Step 2

Place the bag inside the freezer after the bag is done drying. This hack uses the body of water to squeeze out a lot more air than your hands are capable of, shaking it while underwater can help squeeze out more air, though not as effective as an actual vacuum sealer, this can still help prolong the shelf life of frozen foods in your freezer better than manual squeezing and can help fight freezer burn as well.
